Remember, when you’re doing origami the bigger your paper is the easier the folding will be. All you need is a square piece of paper and follow along with us. That’s a wrap on project Great Horned Owl. This owl is not too hard and not too easy, just right. I solved this by softening paper using water, and keeping it together with lots and lots of clips…) Thick paper likes to not stay together very well. (Seriously though, it kind of looks like my owl is wearing a hoodie from the back.Īnyway, went through 3 prototypes and a very specific foot study just to figure out the feet.Ģnd: Tried extending body to allow more “feet paper” but that made it ugly.įoot Study: Now I can have feet on my first prototype! But that is to be expected of anything, I suppose. But I think I already said that there are some flaws on this owl. Although they’re kind of freaky and stuck together. The feet took me forever to figure out.Īnd I did it. So I decided, then and there, that my owl NEEDED FEET. I felt that in this photo, the feet were very essential. It is this picture of the great horned owl that greatly inspired me to make magnificently patterned wings and whatnot. I thought that would look great on a wing. And the fact that it hid layers to allow the skirt to be all wavy and stuff. So now I know how to make a box-pleated skirt.īut I thought the pattern looked really cool. That’s when I actually clicked on one of those videos and watched through the whole thing. So I typed it into youtube, and I got videos of people sewing and how to make a box-pleated skirt. First, I saw the word “box pleat” somewhere on an origami site and I thought, “that sounds like a fancy fold.” I should see what that is. There’s kind of a funny story behind how I decided on the design of the owl’s wings. If you want something more advanced, try the more difficult owl that involves creating a bird base and then twisting the wings. If you're a beginner, start with the simple origami owl that only requires a few basic folds. I simply have to have them spread out and everything. Making an origami owl is a fun paper craft that anyone can do, no matter your level of paper-folding skills. I’ve seen a lot of owl models folded online with the wings folded to the side to show the owl at rest, but I think that if one is ever folding a bird, the wings are one of the most striking parts. The next reason I wanted to fold a bird is because they have wings. You’ll see in the diagrams coming out in the future. yeaaaahhh I don’t know if I’m very good at explaining this. But the point is that rather than using a whole separate flap or folding in the second color of the paper to serve as eyes, the eyes are simply pushed out or pushed in. I don’t know if that’s a very good word for it. The thing I was trying to achieve with the eyes in this piece is what I’m going to call “implied eyes.” I just came up with that now. Unfold, then make another fold, taking the left tip over to the right one, and crease. Fold the top of the diamond all the way down to the bottom and crease. The eyes of the owl really aren’t that visible at all. Start with a square of origami paper (colored side up). So the horns I folded from the very start and it acted as a base for the rest of the entire model. I wanted to make a bird and I wanted horns. The whole concept of making the great horned owl really came from the horns. The main things I was really going for in this piece were the “horns,” eyes, wings, and tail of the owl. I don’t know how well I did anatomically, but I’m still proud of the final outcome. My dad says it looks more like a screech owl. It’s supposed to be a great horned owl at least. More Advanced Origami Owl Idea This owl is adorable Grab your favorite origami paper and make this wide-eyed owl This paper craft is more suitable for older kids. The crease patterns are sorted alphabetically based on name.Well. With some simple folds, on the center line, sides of the model, and a top triangle, your little ones will be able to make a fun 3D origami owl. I tried to link to an actual HTML page on the site wherever possible, but in some cases, this was not possible.Ĭlick on a category title below to expand that category and see a list of all the crease patterns. The link here will take you to the pattern on someone else’s site. Please note that none of these crease patterns are hosted on this site. The difficulty is purely based on how complicated I think the crease pattern looks. The difficulty ranges from Beginner > Easy > Intermediate > Advanced > Super Complex. Crease Patterns marked with a heart are some of my favorites. Here, you’ll find links to many free origami crease patterns from all over the Internet. I personally still have trouble doing it, even with simple models. It’s much harder to fold an origami model from a crease pattern than it is from a diagram. A crease pattern is basically just an origami model that has been unfolded and shows all the creases on the original flat piece of paper. Crease patterns are a quick and easy way to record how to fold an origami model.
